The Dunbar Center is an iconic building located in the Old Hill neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts. This historic organization, over 100 years old, has produced elite leaders in the areas of the arts, education, entrepreneurship, sports, etc. Very few residents within the greater Springfield area can remember life without The Dunbar. From the little girls and boys studying the art of dance under the renowned Frank Hatchett, to the sweltering basketball matches in the “Death Valley” gym, or the parties in the basement or kids just being kids, Dunbar lives in the hearts and minds of all who grew into the fabric and strength of our broader community.
When The Dunbar Community Center faced the threat of padlocks, Mt. Zion Baptist Church stepped in and stepped up to stave off foreclosure. Mt. Zion purchased the facility in October 2016 and moved our Church to this campus the following May.
At The Dunbar Center, Mt. Zion continues to expand upon the areas of Arts, Wellness, and Education by strategically collaborating with additional agencies and organizations, currently offering such things as dance classes, after-school care, basketball sessions—just to name a few. Mt. Zion firmly believes the possibilities are endless.
